Today
After scraping the rapture
from our tongues
we watched something living
as it grew under glass;
watched its bones set and fuse
like new ice meeting
the edge of a river.
A fingernail forced
into the dark of a fist
it was seeking
the freedom of air;
the memory of eyelash
in the grass of a paintbrush
or the itch of a heart as its blood runs to dust.
